The third edition of the NMB Bank MastaBata promotion series kicked off in earnest over the weekend with over TZS 240 million earmarked as prize money for the lucky winners.

The bank has since 2018 run the digital finance promotions to encourage use of Mastercard payment cards in support of national efforts to make Tanzania a less cash society.

Speaking at the event to launch the new reward campaign dubbed MastaBata-KivyakoVyako, Chief Finance Officer (CFO) Juma Kimori said customers making payments using NMB MasterPass QR will also be part of the competition.

“More than three million NMB cardholders and customers stand a chance to win different cash prizes during the three months of the campaign,” Mr Kimori told reporters at the bank’s head office in Dar es Salaam.

“There will be weekly draws that will see 100 lucky winners every week walk away with TZS 100,000/- each, 25 monthly winners who will luckily be walking away with TZS 1,000,000/- and the grand finale which will witness 30 customers grabbing TZS 3,000,000/-,” he explained.

The CFO said the prize money will be topped up into winners’ accounts to encourage them to continue paying using their Mastercard cards. According to him, NMB was also using the campaign to reward loyal customers who have transformed together with the bank in its digital transformation journey.

Mr Kimori said the MastaBata investment has not only been a success in promoting digital payments but also for supporting e-commerce platforms. During the three years of the venture, he noted, card usage has increased tremendously and become popular amongst NMB customers.

This led to Mastercard International awarding the bank a special trophy last month for being the fastest bank in card usage growth in Tanzania with a year-on-year surge of 104 per cent, Mr Kimori pointed out.

“We are now back with a bigger, better campaign to spur card usage in the country by rewarding our customers who are key partners in building a cashless society. This promotion aims at rewarding them for their loyalty and it is an incentive to our new customers for choosing NMB as their bank of choice,” he added.

The lender has been the first local bank to issue a secured EMV (Chip and Pin) MasterCard with contactless technology and pioneered its largest roll out in the country to date.

Contactless technology allows consumers to make fast, secure and more convenient payments, and is ideal for quick payment environments where speed and convenience matter most such as public transport, major retailers and fuel stations.
