Nipe Fagio: World Cleanup Day is a wakeup call to the global plastic crisis

World Cleanup Day is an advocacy day. It is an opportunity to bring people together to learn about the waste situation in the country and to push for strong policies related to the plastic lifecycle.

Speaking during the commemoration of the World Cleanup Day yesterday at the Selandar Beach cleanup site, Dar es Salaam, Ana Le Rocha, Nipe Fagio’s Executive Director said her organization is proud to be the leader of World Cleanup Day in Tanzania.

“We are very proud to lead the World Cleanup Day in Tanzania for the fifth year in a row, since 2018. This year we had events in eight locations in Dar es Salaam and twenty locations in the other regions of the country.

“With waste being a fundamental issue in Tanzania, events like the World Cleanup Day are a way for us to engage people and to collect data through waste and brand audits, which help us identify the top polluters and sources of pollution in the country. We hope that these efforts will drive systemic change in the environmental and solid waste management sector in Tanzania” Ana said.

Ms. Rocha explained that the waste and brand audit report generated from the World Cleanup Day is key to providing decision-makers with tools to address the issue of waste and plastic pollution by enhancing data-driven decision-making to drive positive change in Tanzania.

“One of the goals of organizing the World Cleanup Day is getting people to better understand the pollution found in our environment and collecting data to advocate for measures, like Extended Producer Responsibility, that enable systemic change” Ana noted.

As a leader of the World Cleanup Day in Tanzania, Nipe Fagio would like to thank our partners all over the country for their support and applaud all the community groups, volunteers, NGOs, local governments, schools and other key actors in the environmental sector for making this year’s World Cleanup Day a successful one.

“We need to work together so that we can beat plastic pollution and make Tanzania a waste-free country through awareness raising, data collection and advocacy,” Ana added.
